Four courageous NCOs from the Squadron have recently undertaken the 282 Drill Instructor (Cadet) Course run exclusively by SGT (ATC) Akhtar, whom is a qualified ATC Drill Instructor.

The weekend was both mentally and physically demanding with lots to learn. Most of the time was spent on the Parade Square with lessons about Flight Drill, Squadron Drill, Communication Drill,  Foot Drill and Banner Drill being a just a few.

“Being a Cadet Drill Instructor is not an easy job. Those Cadets that decide to take on this challenging task have to be mentally ready, physically fit and most of all enjoy doing drill. A DI must set the highest of standards at all times and know their subject well” states SGT (ATC) Akhtar.

On the Sunday, the potentials were assessed on what they had learnt over the weekend in the form of a Drill Mutual and written test. The NCOs were given a drill movement each to teach and using a sequence of drill instructions, had to deliver the lesson to their colleagues as part of their assessment.

“The course was challenging yet very useful. My favourite lesson was Communication Drill as we were spread out around the Parade Square and had to give clear and concise commands to overcome all the background noise and great distances. I now feel more confident whilst teaching drill to cadets and the course has helped me improve my own drill and drill voice” exclaimed CPL Allen, whom achieved top student on the course.

The NCOs that successfully passed the course were SGT Kirabira and CPL Allen, whom both strive to raise drill standards amongst the ranks at 282 Squadron.
