Part of the recruitment programme at 282 Squadron is navigation. Although very basic at this level, the cadets need to show basic understanding of the map and compass in order to progress up.

After spending some hours on basic theory, the recruits set out to Wanstead Park to do some practical work with their map and compass.

"Although Wanstead Park is small, its a great starting point for cadets who have never used a map and compass before. We need to be sure that they can use the map and compass before they venture into more demanding and remote locations", as said by Instructor Cadet Flight Sergeant Flynn who is currently studying for his Basic Expedition Leaders Award. This will enable him to instruct cadets on navigation and lead expeditions in low land areas.

The cadets will have opportunities to undertake navigation exercises in the South Downs, Lake District, Snowdon and the Brecon Beacons and complete various aspects of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
