Cadets can keep their uniform to a high standard by keeping an eye on the 'uniform tip' page. The NCOs are always placing tips to help with maintaining your uniform. If you cannot find what you are looking for, speak to an NCO on a squadron night.
Always wipe down your shoes before applying polish. This will prevent any lumps from building up or scratches on toe-caps. When polishing your shoes, always use 'Kiwi Black Polish' either cotton wool or a cloth. Do not use a cloth that will leave scratches on your toe-caps. Use one finger and make small circles to rub in the polish and create the shine. Once the black polish has been rubbed in and you have a base coat, use 'kiwi Parade Gloss' to give it another layer and long lasting shine. Do not use any cheap polish or one of those quick shine brushes. These will just ruin your shoes and double the work. Use an old tooth brush to polish inside of grooves and to remove any dust. Polish the sole of the shoe to make it more waterproof. Always polish your shoes before going to the squadron. This way you will get used to polishing and also the more you polish, the more shinier they'll get. Best of all, you won't lose any marks on inspection and won't get told off by the NCOs. Best tip off all: Use your brain and pay a NCO to polish your shoes. This way the NCO in-charge cannot moan.
For some reason, when a new cadet is issued uniform, the one thing they always do it put a crease where it doesn't belong. For example, two creases are put on either side of the brassard. That's a big No No! The brassard should have no creases in it at all. It should be ironed from the back, not front, otherwise there's a chance of burning the badges. If it is ironed properly, it should be able to stand up on a flat surface without falling over. TIP FOR LIFE: If you are issued uniform without a crease, don't put a crease in it, unless told otherwise. Fluff, fluff, go away......Come back another day!! Have you ever wondered why the fluff on your jumper never goes away no matter how hard you try? Well the answer is that it'll never go away. As long as you rub your arms against your body, then fluff will always be created. You can't get rid of it, but you can stop it for one night. There are many ways. Shaving your jumper, burning the fluff with a lighter, using sticky tape and removing the fluff. All effective ways, but to tell the truth, I've never used any off these. The method I find most effective is using a hot iron. Not only does that melt all the fluff, it removes any creases and keeps the surface smooth.
